I have been a fan of Christian romances since I was probably around twelve years old. I started with Janette Oke and have loved these types of books ever since. Song of My Heart didn't let me down.
Sadie Wagner is provided the opportunity to move to Goldtree, Kansas so she can work in a mercantile to help her family back home. Her step-father is bedridden and has not been able to work for some time. Sadie had been hoping for a chance to help her family financially and her step-cousin Sid sends her the answer to prayer she had been waiting for. Not only will she be able to send money home, but Sid has promised her the chance to live out her passion...to sing in an opera house!
She learns along the way that Sid has been in love with her for many years and is hopeful she will return those feelings. But God has other plans...
Thad McKane arrives in town as the new Sheriff, a position he hopes is temporary as he feels he is headed into ministry long term. He has been asked to Goldtree, Kansas to help track down a boot-legging operation and those responsible. He begins to fall for Sadie but is worried when he begins to be suspicious of the happenings at the opera house at which Sadie has been performing...and her possible connection.
Overall, Song of My Heart is a good book, it's not one that will probably stick out in my mind over the years, but it was an easy and fun read. Although I do have to say that I was thrown for a bit of a loop with the step-cousin so actually, it might stick out in my head, that is not a typical love interest in your typical "Christian romance" books. It made for an even more intriguing read, adding extra plot twists you don't normally find. This was my first read from Kim Vogel Sawyer also and I look forward to reading more of her work. She adds many details that make you feel a part of the story.
I definitely recommend Song of My Heart to any of you who enjoy Christian fiction, especially historical fiction/romances. You are able to easily get into the main characters and you will enjoy the Baxter sisters who own the mercantile :-)
About the book:
Sadie Wagner has always been devoted to her family. So when her stepfather is injured and can't work, she decides to leave home and accept a position as a clerk at the mercantile in Goldtree, Kansas. Goldtree also offers the opportunity to use her God-given singing talent--though the promised opera house is far different from what she imagined. With her family needing every cent she can provide, Sadie will do anything to keep her job.
Thad McKane comes to Goldtree at the request of the town council. The town has been plagued by bootlegging operations, and Thad believes he can find the culprit.
After he earns enough money doing sheriff work, he wants to use it to pay for his training to become a minister.
Thad is immediately attracted to the beautiful singer who performs in Asa Baxter's unusual opera house, but when he hears her practicing bawdy tunes, he begins to wonder if she's far less innocent than she seems. And when Sadie appears to be part of the very crimes he's come to investigate, is there any hope the love blossoming between them will survive?
